Structural editing helps to develop and shape the overall organization and content of your writing for the intended audience, medium, and purpose. For fiction, this can look like spotting plot holes or pointing out inconsistencies. For non-fiction, this can look like creating "big picture" order and cohesiveness in the themes and arguments in your text. Then end goal of structural editing is to make the many parts of your work fit together as a cohesive whole for your readers.
Stylistic editing helps to refine language, clarify meaning, and ensure coherence and flow in your sentences and paragraphs. This type of editing focuses on connecting ideas, trimming unneeded text, and using literary devices for style and flourish. It also includes applying conscious language and plain language principles, if needed.
Copy editing ensures that grammar, punctuation, spelling, and usage are correct and consistent in your work. Relevant subject matter is also fact-checked for accuracy and content is assessed for completeness. This is the type of editing most commonly desired (and known colloquially as "proofreading") – we comb through your work for grammatical issues so you don’t have to!
A combination of copy editing and stylistic editing (above). This is the type of editing most commonly needed, and for many projects, this service provides the best value for money. If you aren’t sure which type of editing might serve you best, this is probably the one.
Proofreading examines formatted and typeset material for correctness and internal consistency against the edited manuscript. This is typically the last round of editing before a document is finished or published.
